Well, well, well, the tariff roller coaster continues, folks. One minute they’re on, then they’re off, then they’re back on again—sort of like your last disc golf round; complete chaos. So, what does this tariff madness mean for your disc golf hobby?
Buckle up, because the ride’s about to get interesting.
Discs: The Good News, the Bad News, and the ‘Meh’ News
US Disc Manufacturing Dominates Disc Golf
First, the good news—almost all of the big dogs in the disc golf world like Innova, Discraft, and MVP are based right here in the good ol’ US of A. So, no tariffs for them. That means if you’re after a new disc from one of the big brands, you’re mostly in the clear. No sudden, shocking price hikes. You can still go on that disc shopping spree without having to sell your other kidney.
But hold your horses—just because they’re made in the US doesn’t mean they won’t eventually feel the burn. You see, many of these companies still rely on overseas plastic particles, machinery, and some even buy disc molds that are being churned out in some faraway land. Sure, right now it’s not an issue, since disc golf isn’t exactly expanding like wildfire at the moment, but if things stay wacky, you might notice your favorite disc starting to creep up in price as the supply of plastic particles gets thinner than a Discraft Flick.
Not Great News for a Sinking House of Discs
And then there’s the other shoe. Latitude 64, that Swedish powerhouse, is located across the pond in Europe. Most of the Trilogy brands are already struggling. If these tariffs continue, you can expect more than just a big ol’ price hike for Latitude’s discs, but a major crash of all of House of Discs brands which includes: Dynamic Discs, Westside, Discmania, and Kastaplast. Prepare your wallet for some sticker shock and don’t be surprised if there is some major shakeup with foreign brands.
Chinese Manufacturers
If you’re into the Chinese-made discs—like Divergent, Yikun, Viking, XCom, Meridian, Prodigy —well, buckle up and put your seat back in the full upright and locked position, because you won’t be seeing many new discs from those brands this summer. Us companies just aren’t going to pay more than double the normal price to have them shipped to the US.
And as for their growth?
Yeah, that’s basically off the table. Tariffs, if they continue, will crush these companies harder than a floppy disc (you know like a Divergent Discs Alpas, not like the 1990’s computer floppy disks) into the chains.
But hey, the good news? At Discount Disc Golf, we’ve got a ridiculous surplus of overstocked discs from these brands, so you won’t have to worry about any price hikes anytime soon. In fact, you’ll still find these bad boys featured as our Deals of the Day, with prices so low, they’re basically stealing from themselves.
Bags, Baskets, and Carts—Oh My!
Now, here’s where the real chaos happens. Sure, your disc shopping might be fine (for now), but everything else? Buckle up, buttercup. If you’ve got your eye on a new bag, basket, or cart, you’d better get it now.
Why?
Because almost all of those are made overseas. And if tariffs keep up, you’re going to see prices skyrocket faster than a Ben Wiggins Jr. drive.
Here’s the deal: While companies have plenty of stock in their warehouses, the prices are still hanging out in the “reasonable” zone. But once that stock starts running low, prices are going to inflate like it’s 2020. If these tariffs are here for the long haul, you could be looking at a big price bump across the board for bags, baskets, and carts.
The Bottom Line: Buy Now, Cry Later
It’s possible that President Trump and the tariff situation are all under control. It’s just a big bluff, a negotiation strategy to lower tariffs worldwide and open up more free trade. But… it’s also possible that these tariffs are legit and will impact the global disc golf market.
If you’re planning to upgrade your gear, I highly recommend you pull the trigger now.
Seriously. If the tariffs stick around, we’ll all be in for a rude awakening when it comes to prices.
And hey, if you’re looking for a killer deal on bags and baskets before the prices start climbing, check out what we’ve got in stock right now (no gurantee they will be later, we’re an outlet store, we only stock what we can get for really cheap). You’ll thank us later when you’re throwing down your savings instead of throwing your wallet out the window.
