The XCOM Zion is the XCOM’s distance driver for beginners, sticking with lighter weights so that beginners and intermediates can get great results without as much effort. The Zion offers great grip and flexibility for precise throws and longer distances. Intermediate players will be able to practice S-curve flights and accurately aim their throws. If you like the Zion also check out the rest of XCom. Read about them in our blog.
Who knew that this Xcom base plastic driver would go so far? I'm an intermediate player and I could get this 350+ feet! It flips up from a hyzer release and soars for a long time before fading off at the end. It is a slightly understable distance driver, so if you throw much harder than me, you'll find it goes a lot more to the understable side of things. For beginners, I think it's not the perfect driver, you'll probably find more distance with the Xcom fairway-- but it's a great disc to grow into. Really loving this one!
It is really hard for one mid-range to stand above others when really, they're designed to do some very basic things-- get you across the shorter stretches of fairway with precision. I liked the [****] for this-- it has a very slight fade, but not too much. It isn't too flippy or too overstable. It does come in a pretty light weight, so it is a good option for beginners who want a mid-range to go around objects, but that isn't too hard to throw.
This driver, along with other XCom discs, tends to come in a lighter weight and in a base plastic to keep it inexpensive and appealing to new players. But compared to some of their other discs, I actually found the Zion to be more useful for my own game. I'm an experienced recreational player and found that the Zion was able to handle a more powerful throw than their other discs and still had a little fade at the end of flight. Thus I found that I could use it to shape my shots into S-curves and throw it at difference speeds for different flight paths. It is a surprisingly nice all-purpose driver. Of course, advanced players probably wouldn't be caught throwing around disc like this in soft plastic, but for the rest of us, it's not a bad disc for recreational rounds.
