Ah, MAP pricing—the thorn in every bargain hunter’s side and the reason why some discs seem to have an invisible force field preventing discounts. But what exactly is this mysterious force known as MAP pricing, and why does it sometimes make our job at Discount Disc Golf feel like every hole is throwing into a hurricane headwind?

What is MAP Pricing?

MAP stands for Minimum Advertised Pricing, which is just a fancy way of saying, “Hey, retailers, you’re not allowed to publicly list this product for less than X amount.” It’s a way for disc golf manufacturers to protect their brand image and ensure that stores (including us) don’t undercut each other into oblivion.

Now, while MAP pricing sets a floor for advertised prices, it’s usually still possible to snag discs below MAP with the use of discount codes or bundle deals. But not if you’re dealing with MVP. Oh no, MVP and its subsidiaries (Axiom, Streamline) take MAP pricing so seriously, they’d probably enforce it on their grandma’s garage sale if she tried to sell an old James Proctor Envy for too little.

MVP doesn’t allow any of their discs to be sold below MAP, even with discount codes. So, as much as we love a good deal, our hands are tied when it comes to slashing prices on their plastic. If you ever wondered why MVP discs don’t go on sale, now you know—it’s not because we don’t want to, it’s because if we want to keep selling MVP (which we do) we can’t.

The Little Guys: No MAP, No Problem!

The good news? Not every brand is obsessed with MAP pricing. Many of the smaller, independent brands believe in the free market (bless their entrepreneurial hearts), which is why we can have entire pages dedicated to $6 and $10 discs. That’s right—no pricing handcuffs, no corporate overlords setting the rules—just pure, unfiltered disc golf savings. These brands let us do what we do best: pass the savings straight to you, no secret MAP police involved.

So, whether we’re working around MAP pricing, taking advantage of MAP holidays, or laughing in the face of MSRP, our goal at Discount Disc Golf remains the same: hooking you up with the best prices possible, whenever we possibly can.

MVP & Disc Golf Auctions: No Dollar Starts for You!

Now, let’s talk about our auctions. You might have noticed that we don’t sell MVP discs at our Dollar Start Auctions. Why? Because, horror of horrors, some discs might sell for less than MAP, and MVP would come down on us like a Firebird spike hyzer tombstoning into soggy ground. The only way we can include their discs in auctions is if we start the bidding at MAP price or sneak them into a WhatNot show during a rare MAP Holiday. Speaking of which…

MAP Holidays: The Only Time We Can Go Wild

If MAP pricing is the strict teacher, MAP Holidays are the glorious snow days where rules relax (at least temporarily). These special times of the year allow retailers (and even manufacturers themselves) to sell below MAP pricing—and you better believe we take full advantage when they happen.

Most disc golf companies host MAP holidays around Black Friday, with discounts lasting anywhere from a couple of days (MVP’s usual stingy approach) to several weeks (House of Discs brands like Dynamic Discs, Discmania, and Latitude 64). Occasionally, manufacturers grant additional MAP holidays throughout the year, typically as a way to clear out overstocked inventory. And when that happens, you know we’re bringing the heat with the lowest prices possible!

Since our business model is built around offering the absolute lowest prices, period, MAP pricing can sometimes feel like the villain standing between us and our mission. It’s the reason you’ll sometimes see us offering the same prices as everyone else—we literally have no choice. But when MAP holidays roll around? That’s when we strike.

MSRP: The Lofty Dreams of Disc Golf Manufacturers

If MAP is the price floor, then MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) is the price ceiling—the wishful thinking number manufacturers slap on their products in hopes that someone, somewhere, will actually pay full price.

You’ll typically see MSRP pricing in places where competitive pricing isn’t really a thing, like a manufacturer’s own website (where they want to preserve their product’s perceived value) or big-box stores and local shops where convenience reigns and comparison shopping isn’t as easy. But let’s be honest—no one actually buys discs at MSRP online, unless they have no other option.

Most major disc golf manufacturers—including Innova, MVP, and House of Discs brands—enforce both MAP and MSRP pricing, which means retailers have to play by the rules if they want to carry their products. And while we love selling great discs, we love helping you get the best deal even more.

So, whether we’re working around MAP pricing, taking advantage of MAP holidays, or laughing in the face of MSRP, our goal at Discount Disc Golf remains the same: hooking you up with the best prices possible, whenever we possibly can.

And hey, if you ever feel frustrated about a price floor, just remember—at least we’re not out here charging MSRP!
