Best Fairway Drivers

discount disc golf logo

Fairway drivers (sometimes called ‘control drivers’) fill the gap between the high-speed, long distance driver and shorter, technical midrange discs. They can be used for long or short drives, technical shots, or rollers. Many disc golfers can throw them as far or farther than distance drivers, since they have slower speed ratings. That is because a lot of players can’t throw higher-speed discs fast enough to get their full flight. Since fairway drivers have narrower rims, many players like them simply because they are easier to grip.

One thing that disc golfers of all skill levels can agree about: it’s nice to save money when buying fairway drivers. Here at Discount Disc Golf we have screaming deals on some of the best fairway drivers out there. We’ve compiled of list of some of the best. We now present the Best Fairway Drivers!

1 – Divergent Discs Kraken

divergent discs kraken

The Kraken is a great fairway driver that can be used for some long throws! Its flight numbers show that it has a little turn and a good fade. Perfect for carving out S-curves, the Doomsday fairway driver is one of our most popular molds. It is also a great disc for newer players to get their drives to the next level.

2 – Thought Space Athletics Omen

TSA Omen

Thought Space Athletics is well known in disc golf for the amazing artwork on their discs, and the feel of their plastics. The Omen has both. The mold is a little more overstable than other discs on the list. It is perfect for headwind shots, or for players with a little more arm speed. Newer players should get this disc in lighter weights.

3 – Divergent Discs Tiyanak

divergent discs tiyanak

Named after a vampire-like creature, the Tiyanak is an extremely understable mold from Divergent Discs. In fact, if you can throw very far at all, you might want to skip this disc. For newer/younger players, the ‘flippy-ness’ of the disc will help you learn how to get some turn on a disc.

4 – Discmania CD1

discmania CD1

The CD1 (CD=Control Driver) is a mold that can be utilized for nearly every shot you need. It has a little turn, but the turn can be compounded with an anhyzer throw. It has a little fade, but add a bit of hyzer angle and you’ll be nailing your landing area. The CD1 was/is the disc fairway driver chosen my many pros.

5 – Yikun View

yikun view

Although the View isn’t quite as understable as the Tiyanak (above), it is still one of the flippier molds you’ll find. That characteristic is great for newer players. For better players, you could still pull out the View if you were throwing with a stiff tailwind. That might give you a nice S-curve. The view comes in Budget-friendly plastics, and premium, long lasting plastics.

6 – Doomsday Discs Blackout

doomsday discs blackout

I had to include a mold from Doomsday on the list! The Blackout is a control driver for people with a wide range of skills. With enough arm speed, the Blackout can hyzer-flip and fly a long way. Newer players can throw the blackout straight or anhyzer for lengthy drives. If you aren’t familiar with the Doomsday brand, do yourself a favor and check it out. You might decide to join the Doomsday family!

Best Overstable Fairway Drivers

Overstable fairways drivers typically have little or no turn in their flight. They are also heavy on fade. This combination creates some opportunities to throw reliably in certain conditions. For example, if you are throwing into a strong headwind. In that case, the effect the wind has is to turn your disc more than usual. With an overstable mold, the disc will resist the turn and fly like a less stable disc would with no wind. The same goes for throwing downhill. Gravity gives your arm a boost and you need a little more overstability to prevent the disc from overturning.

Best Understable Fairway Drivers

Understable discs have a lot of turn in their flight numbers (more negative than stable discs). And they usually have less fade at the end of their flight. On flat ground and with little wind, an understable disc will turn quite a bit to the right (for RHBH throwers) then fade gently to the left. If you are throwing with a strong tailwind, an understable mold will prevent the disc from fading too much or too soon. When you are throwing uphill, gravity works against you and the disc won’t fly as far. An understable mold will still give you a little turn, or at least help the disc fly further.

Best Selling Stable Fairway Drivers

Stable discs don’t have a lot of turn, nor a lot of fade. They have a fairly straight flight and less likely to get a big skip when they land. A stable disc is easy to throw on a hyzer or anhyzer, and more likely to hold the position that they are thrown in. They are affect by head and tailwinds and might not be the disc of choice in those conditions. For many of your throws in calm to moderate wind conditions, stable discs will be your go-to discs. Although, it is nice to have molds with differing stabilities, to be prepared for all conditions.
