There are several factors that determine the flight of a disc. Let’s look at them and see how those factors should steer your disc selections.

Disc Weight

It is somewhat surprising how important disc weight is for disc golfers. Especially beginners.  A disc mold and plastic at 175g will flight differently that the same mold at 165g, and those won’t fly the same as the same mold at 150g. It all comes down to physics.

In order to get a disc flying like the manufacturer intended, it must be thrown at the proper speed. To achieve the proper speed, good form and timing are necessary. Since beginners typically lack the skill to achieve the proper form, therefore fail to get the disc flying at the necessary speed, it becomes difficult for them to get discs to fly like they should. When new players throw lighter discs, they are more likely to get the disc up to the necessary speed. That is because there is less weight to have to get up to speed.

Flight Numbers

If you need a review of disc golf flight numbers and what they mean, check out this blog.

Here are the four flight numbers, and how beginners should use that number:

Speed – Since the speed rating indicates how fast the disc needs to be thrown in order for it to fly right, beginners should stick to lower speed discs. Attempting to throw a disc speed that is beyond your skill level is an invitation to develop bad habits. Stick with molds that are 6 or less to start. If you can get lighter discs, like in the 150g range, you can get slightly higher speeds. Don’t be lured by a disc that is advertised as ‘long-range’ or ‘high-speed’. It only lives up to those descriptions if you have the necessary skill level.

Glide – Beginners should try to get discs with as much glide as possible. That will assist in keeping the disc in the air longer, which will give you longer throws.

Turn – If you can get a mold that has more turn, you will have a disc that tries to turn to the right as it flights, which will give you a longer flight. When shopping for discs, look for more turn. Get discs that have a turn rating between -1 an -4.  If your disc turns too much to the right, that may be a good indication that you are ready for faster discs or discs with less turn.

An exception to those turn numbers would be for a disc that you could throw in a headwind. If you want a disc that will not turn way over in a headwind, get a disc that has 0 turn an a little more fade than usual.

Fade – A beginner should look for molds that have a fade of 2 or less. That will prevent the disc from starting to fade left immediately out of your hand, and give you a better chance of a longer flight. Typically, beginners find that most of their discs feel like they have a lot of fade. Fade occurs when the disc slows down, and with beginners the disc is not usually flying fast to begin with.

With those suggestion in mind, let’s find some great beginner discs.
